Exposing Myself

I am a 46-year-old mother of four daughters.

I have never had a mammogram.

I don't have a good excuse.

I have good health insurance.

I've been to my gynecologist recently for a pap smear and a breast exam.

My doctor urged me to get a mamogram.

My doctor gave me a number to call to schedule a mammogram.

I haven't done it yet.

I know I could be risking my life, so why haven't I had this test?

hey, girl--get that mammo. it's really not bad. it hurts briefly, very briefly--as soon as they stop xraying the machine automatically releases your breast. the pain is merely compression pain, and it lasts about five seconds each time.

for me, they take three images of each breast.

my sister's cancer was not discovered through a mammogram. she had various warnings--lumps that she ignored, pain in her back that she ignored.

she had fibrous breats, and so had had many, many lumps in the past that all turned out to be nothing. so this one she ignored, and it turned out to be something.

she finally went to the doctor when she cracked a rib--and he found cancer in the rib.

by then, it was too late. she lived seven years, but they were difficult years.

a mammo takes less than an hour, from start to finish.

leave me a post after you make the appointment. i'll answer any questions you might have.

ps by "less than an hour" i mean driving there and driving home. the mammo itself takes about five minutes.
